Dear Careers Colleagues:
I am writing to encourage all of you to consider submitting papers for the Southwest Academy of Management (SWAM) annual conference. SWAM is a regional affiliate of the Academy of Management. I am serving as the Track Chair for the Human Resources/Careers/Gender and Diversity area and I would LOVE to see lots of submissions on careers. Please remember that careers-related submissions will be considered for the Michael J. Driver Best Careers Paper in the Southwest Region award! (Okay, so the award title is longer than the title of your paper--doesn't it sound great?) If you don't have a paper, please consider signing up as a reviewer. You can use the same electronic system that is used for submissions, and you'll earn my deep gratitude. And if the information about Houston gets your attention and you'd like to come, session chairs and discussants are generally drawn from the reviewer pool, so please indicate your willingness.
The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2010. The conference itself will be held from March 9 to March 12 in Houston, Texas. The actual Call for Papers follows my signature. But here's a little information about the conference and about Houston as an enticement to submit or volunteer to review.
Come join us, March 9-12, in the newly refurbished Houston Hyatt Regency. Since our last Houston visit, this hotel has undergone a mega-million dollar facelift. FBD (the Federation of Business Disciplines, our "umbrella" organization) reports that hotel conference rates will be single rooms, $138; doubles, $155; triples, $167; and quads, $185. These rates include free in-room Internet service.
Since our last Houston conference, a new cluster of shops, restaurants, and pubs-known as The Pavilions-has been built within easy walking distance. The downtown area contains several professional sports venues, opera, ballet, theatre, and the aquarium. Nearby are the Houston zoo and museum district. A little farther afield, you can tour NASA's Johnson Space Center, home to astronaut training facilities and mission control for all U.S. manned space flight. Explore additional Houston options at www.visithoustontexas.com.
Begin your journey by submitting a paper or proposing a workshop/symposium. Take a minute to scan the "call for papers" at the end of this message. We also need volunteer reviewers. If you are interested in reviewing, please indicate if you are also interested in serving as a session chair or discussant.
Many SWAM members begin their affiliation during their graduate school years. So we welcome the submissions, input, and energy of doctoral students. Please direct your inquiries to Gayle Baugh, Human Resources/Careers/Gender and Diversity track chair, at gbaugh@uwf.edu or call me at (850) 474-2206.
