Research position in global mobility

  • 1.  Research position in global mobility

    Posted 01-30-2008 15:47
    Dear Career Netters,

I am looking for a researcher for a project on global mobility.  The position would be appropriate as a post-doc but might also work for a non-PhD or proto-PhD who has international experience (not just non-US, as many Americans wrongly use the term, but actual cross-border experience) building a large dataset, especially on career-related phenomena.  For those who don't know IMD, we are a globally top-ranked MBA and Executive Education school with an excellent research record and substantial research support (see www.imd.ch).  The position could either be resident at IMD (in Lausanne, Switzerland) or could be for a contract researcher based elsewhere, particularly in North America or Europe where most of the data collection will take place (though it will be from global populations).  In either case a fair amount of travel will be required.

The subject of the research is the movement of professionals across borders for work.  There is a lot of research on related topics but nobody seems to have real representative numbers to tell us how many cross-border moves have actually taken place or how this has changed over time, so this project is first and foremost a systematic tabulation.  The main research questions are: 1) how many people have actually changed countries (and how many times and where) in order to take (or continue) a job, 2) how is this changing (if at all), and 3) how does this vary by industry, region of the world, or demographic category?  From this base it should be possible to investigate all kinds of other questions, such as what factors lead to serial border-crossing for work; do certain educational backgrounds lead to more cross-border working, etc.

To begin with, two of IMD's partner companies interested in mobility (multi-billion dollar firms and global leaders in their industries) have offered to let us either survey their populations (thousands of professionals) or, in one case, to access their database(s) of hundreds of thousands of c.v.s of job candidiates (with proper privacy controls of course).  Other companies may follow.  This is potentially a very exciting opportunity but we will have to act fast in order to take it up.

The project is ready to start immediately (though I will wait a few months if necessary in order to get the right person) and will initially last for six months, with the likelihood of a renewal for a second and possibly a third six-month phase (depending on partner firm and researcher availability).  I expect a stream of publications from this work and the person would be eligible for co-authorship on all academic papers to come out of the research.

The main qualifications for this post are 1) familiarity with data collection, tabulation and analysis methods for large data sets;  2) an understanding and experience of survey methodology; 3) interest and experience in the phenomenon of career mobility; 4) The ability to work independently for extended periods.  Experience working across borders and multiple languages are a big plus, as is a degree from a reputable research institution and a prior publication record, though the latter is not strictly necessary for a recent graduate or current doctoral student.  Finally, if not actual business experience, the confidence and ability to relate well to senior executives in professional services firms is essential.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.  If you are interested in this project, please contact me by e-mail at the address below with a letter explaining your interest in and appropriateness for the position (addressing the points above), a c.v., and if possible a sample piece of research output.

Feel free to circulate this to individuals you think might be interested or might know someone else who would be, but please do not post it to any other lists.

    Many thanks and best regards,
