2008 CAR Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals
We invite our colleagues in the Careers and other related divisions of the Academy of Management to submit proposals for Professional Development Workshops (PDWs). The PDWs will be held between Friday Aug. 8 1:00 p.m. and Sunday Aug. 10 noon before the start of the regular meetings in Anaheim in August, 2008. Generally, we encourage innovative proposals in any areas that relate to the interests and mission of the Careers Division (see the division's website at http://division.aomonline.org/careers/ ) e.g., teaching, practice, international, and connecting to the overall theme of 2008 "The Questions We Ask".
For 2008, we are especially looking for submissions of the following type of PDWs:
(1) All Careers Event (ACE): One of the explicit wishes of ours members is to have the opportunity to learn from each other in a more informal context. Many of us remember the great Rocky Mountains trip in Denver or the Rocky tour in Philadelphia – Saturday off-site events full of career activities which combined something special in the local area with presentations on prominent themes in careers. If you have any ideas or want to put forward a proposal, please contact the PDW-Chair in advance of the deadline.
(2) Developmental Workshops: We want to encourage PDWs that offer an integrated, developmental experience to our members that the regular program often cannot provide. Focusing on development (not just "doing more stuff") is a major "value added" that our Division offers to our members. Hence, we look for PDWs that provide such settings, especially through creative, unorthodox and holistic forms of learning and exchange.
(3) Creating and maintaining international careers: An increasing number of our members work internationally, e.g. in culturally mixed teams, pursuing an international career or going abroad during a sabbatical. We invite PDWs that deal with the specifics of these experiences and help participants learn from each other.
Beyond these themes, we do wish to emphasize that all innovative and value-adding proposals are strongly encouraged and will be fully considered. Especially workshops at the academia-practice interface are highly welcome.
For the upcoming conference, we would like to get more members involved in the PDW program. If you want more information or to talk things over, please don't hesitate to contact the PDW-chair or contact one of the members of the Executive Committee (see the Careers Division Website). Also, if you have names of any members that you would like to be involved, please pass them through.
The deadline for receiving a PDW proposal is November 15. Please submit your proposal using the new online submission process (see http://submissions.aomonline.org/2008) and not directly to the Careers Division PDW-Chair. Please also note that for 2008, there is an additional 'rule of 3' which applies to PDWs in addition to the unchanged 'rule of 3' for the regular program. In essence, this means that like in the regular program, no person can appear in any 'official role' more than 3 times (for the exact wording please see ...).
We invite you to share the ideas you are considering with us in advance of the deadline and we look forward to your involvement!
