    Careers in the Rough: Call for Manuscripts

     

    The Careers in the Rough workshop is a great opportunity to discuss your careers-related research with leading careers scholars who will mentor you regarding your topic choice, theoretical development, methodology, data analysis, and discuss the implications of your careers research. You may also receive recommendations for possible publication outlets.

     

    The following scholars will be serving as mentors in this workshop: Michael Arthur, Douglas T. Hall, Jeffrey Greenhaus, Sherry Sullivan, Hugh Gunz, Maria Kraimer, Peter Heslin, Wolfgang Mayrhofer, Berrin Erdogan, Kimberly Eddleston, Gayle Baugh, Maury Peiperl, Yehuda Baruch, Barbara Lawrence, Shoshana Dobrow Riza, Jon Briscoe, Corinne Post, Daniel Turban, Gina Dokko, Katharina Chudzikowski, Julia Richardson, and Marijke Verbruggen.

     

    What's involved? Applicants for participation in this PDW are asked to submit:

    ·         a near final careers manuscript and a brief  description (up to  250 words) regarding a challenge related to your research that you would like help addressing

    ·         5-7 keywords, for use in matching you with mentors.

     

    Participants will be placed in conversation with two scholars based largely on the match between their paper and the scholars' interests/areas of expertise. Each participant will receive feedback about the positive aspects of their work, as well as be invited into dialogue about how their manuscript might be improved, in a supportive and encouraging context.

     

    What's careers research? Careers research topics include (but are not limited to):

    -          People's lifelong succession of work experiences

    -          The structure of opportunity to work

    -          The relationship between careers and other aspects of life

    -          Individual career development

    -          Career management strategies

    -          Relationships between human resource systems and careers

    -          Career outcomes (e.g., success, plateauing, discouragement, derailment)

    -          Life cycle interactions with work

    -          Race, culture, and gender effects on careers

    -          Labor force diversity

    -          Internal labor market structures and functions

    -          Cross-cultural careers

    -          Effects of demographic and social changes on work.

     

    Who is this workshop for? This workshop is open to doctoral students and junior faculty who are doing careers-related research and who are the sole or first author of the paper. Pre-registration is required for this PDW as space is limited to the first 22 registrants. If you register for the PDW but do not submit a paper by the deadline (July 18th), your place will be given to the next person on the wait-list.

     

    If you're working on careers-related research, now is the time to prepare your submission for the Careers in the Rough workshop to be held at this year's Academy of Management meeting in Anaheim!

    You can register now for the PDW to reserve your spot

    Last day to register and send manuscript: July 18th, 2016 (to give mentors time to reflect on your paper)

    PDW time: Friday, the 5th of August from 3-5pm.
