Dear members of the Careers Division

A distinguished member of the Division, Dr Mary Mallon, who was Professor of Human Resource Management at Massey University, New Zealand, died early today. The cause of death is thought to be complications resulting from colonic cancer, from which Mary had been suffering since the middle of last year.

In recent years Mary was a key contributor to the Division, and she served as PDW Chair for the 2005 conference, though she was unable to attend it due to her illness. Her death at a relatively early age and at the height of her powers is a major tragedy for the Division, for career studies, and of course for Mary's family and friends. Many of us will mourn a gifted colleague and dear friend. Our thoughts go out particularly at this time to Mary's husband, John Howells, who cared devotedly for her during her illness.

I hope to be able to further details when they come to hand. An obituary will appear in due course in Career Forum.

    Kerr Inkson,
    Chair, Careers Division.
Professor of Management, University of Otago
