Subject: AOM Distinguished Executive Award - Call for Nominations

    Dear Academy Leader:

As you may have read in the Academy of Management News, the Academy is
instituting a new way to select a Distinguished Executive to speak at
    the
annual meeting. This letter is to request your participation in the
    selection process.

Essentially what is involved here is a change in emphasis -- from what
    has
been primarily a speaking invitation to what will be primarily an award
for superlative executive achievement -- in other words, a true
    Executive
of the Year award. As the largest association in the world devoted to
management research and teaching, the Academy of Management is uniquely
qualified to bestow such an award.

We are asking members who have distinguished themselves in terms of
scholarship and service to the Academy to help us choose a worthy
individual for this honor. About 350 members are being requested to take
    part in this endeavor.

We ask you to make up to three nominations for Executive of the Year,
based on sustained and superlative executive achievement over the course
of five years or more continuing to the present. We also ask that each
nomination be accompanied by a brief statement of up to 75 words setting
forth the reasons why this nominee is worthy of the award. The reasons
    are
important, since we hope that, in bestowing this award, the Academy will
not only provide recognition each year for a leader of great distinction
but make a statement about what matters most in leadership.

Nominees can be from any country and from the corporate, public, or
nonprofit sector. Nominations should be e-mailed to
    ExecutiveAward@aom.pace.edu by December 15.

The five individuals who receive the most nominations will be considered
by a selection committee chaired by me, as Academy president, and
consisting of four colleagues widely respected for their scholarship on
executive leadership - Yves Doz of INSEAD, Donald Hambrick of Penn
    State,
Jeffrey Pfeffer of Stanford, and Anne Tsui of Arizona State.

We value your participation in what we hope will be an exciting and
rewarding venture. On behalf of the Academy, thank you for your
    assistance.

    Sincerely,

    Ken G. Smith
    AOM President
Chairman, Executive of the Year Award Committee
