Learning About Resilience:
Exploring Links to Research, Teaching and Our Professional Practice
This PDW builds on the growing academic, teaching and practical interest in resilience as an indicator of human flourishing. We define resilience as a capacity or characteristic of individuals or organizations to maintain positive adjustment-or even thrive-under adverse conditions (Sutcliffe & Vogus, 2003).
Growing academic interest is evidenced by research in psychology and organizational studies that has begun to uncover the antecedents to human resilience, the markers of resilience, and the outcomes of resilience. Teaching and practical interest in cultivating resilience as a dynamic human capability has assumed greater significance in this age of organizational and professional uncertainty, turbulence, and complexity. These interests combine to make this PDW both timely and essential.
We hope that this participatory and informative workshop will be intellectually enriching and practically useful for researching and teaching about resilience, as well as for cultivating resilience in our own lives. The workshop opens with an introduction, in which we share our working definition of resilience. This is followed by two segments. The first focuses on researching resilience and is led by Kathie Sutcliffe (U Michigan), Mary Ann Glynn (Boston College), Modupe Akinola (Harvard U) and Naomi Rothman (New York U). The second focuses on teaching and practicing resilience, led by Jane Dutton (U Michigan), Karen Golden-Biddle (U Alberta), Marlys Christianson (U Michigan) and Daniel Gruber (U Michigan) with instructional materials and cases as well as some techniques for cultivating personal resilience. We end with with a summary oriented toward sustaining ideas, resources and momentum about resilience developed in the PDW.
We invite faculty, doctoral students, and practitioners interested in the topic of resilience to join us on Sunday morning at the Academy meetings.
Pre-registration is required.
