Dear Careers Division colleagues,
Two years ago, a group of Careers Division members came together to create a website of career-related teaching materials. Early website contributors were Silvia Bagdadli, Loic Cadin, Peter Heslin, Barbara Lawrence, Wolfgang Mayrhofer, Polly Parker, Julia Richardson, Jelena Zikic and ourselves. There were two main purposes. One was to create a repository of helpful teaching ideas and materials. The other was to build a community to stimulate creation of fresh materials, and conversation about best teaching practices.
The group came to be called the "Career Studies Teaching Community." All members of the Careers Division were invited to join around one year ago, and our membership quickly grew to 120 participants. However, the question arose of how best to encourage further activity. We noticed that other AoM divisions were starting to build teaching sites for their members, and it was suggested that we transfer our fledgling community to the Careers Division. Early responses to this idea have been enthusiastic.
We would therefore like to ask the Careers Division to adopt the community and its website as their own at the next Academy of Management meeting. We will bring our request to both the Steering Committee and the Business Meeting of the Careers Division at the forthcoming Academy of Management meeting in Boston in August. We will also be asking that a Teaching Community Chair be created as a new position on the steering committee.
In anticipation of the discussion next August a link to the website has already been posted on the Careers Division website (http://www.cardiv.org/). However, you will need a personal login to enter the teaching community site. You can get that by emailing Michael Arthur at marthur@suffolk.edu. We are asking both established and prospective new members to look over the website and offer your comments, questions and suggestions. We are very interested in knowing how to best serve you.
All best wishes,
Michael Arthur & Holly Slay, Co-chairs, Career Studies Teaching Community
