  • 1.  cultural differences in perceptions of marital status

    Posted 01-24-2010 14:51

    Dear colleagues,

    (Apologies for multi-division posting.)

Could you please share with me any cites you might have for cultural differences in perceptions of marital status of men and women (married/committed vs. unmarried/divorced/single/windowed) in organizations/society in general. Specifically "eastern" vs. "western" views/comparisons...but anything general is also fine.

I've looked a bit at the work-family lit hoping to find something in there, but there weren't culture related references...perhaps I'm missing something or am looking in the wrong place?

Any ideas you have will certainly be helpful. As usual, I promise to send back the lists a compilation of responses.

    Many thanks in advance!

    Aarti

    Dear all,

Just sharing a compile of some references and suggestions I got for my request below.

    1)      Ghorbani, M. and Tung, R.L. (2007) "Behind the veil: an exploratory study of the myths and realities of women in the Iranian workforce", Human Resource Management Journal, 17:4, 376-392.

    2)      Nkomo, S. M., & Ngambi, H. (2009) African women in leadership: Current knowledge and a framework for future studies. International Journal of African Renaissance Studies – Multi-, Inter-, and Transdisciplinary, 4(1), 49-68.

On work/family issues but no male comparison....Reference in the paper on Sudan and how women perceived their work/family issues.

    3)      Literature in Anthropology about Kinship.  Marital patterns and commitments change radically from culture to culture.

    Thanks again!

    Aarti
