Summary:
Careers are important for channelling individual contribution to the success and productivity of organizations. In addition, careers are crucial for organizations in attaining creativity, competency and employee wellbeing. However, during the past years the more traditional career concept (e.g., vertical growth and life long employment) has undergone significant turbulence. Researchers increasingly observe new patterns in contemporary careers (e.g., "kaleidoscope", "boundaryless", "post-industrial", and "protean" careers). However, little research shows what determines these new career patterns, and what their outcomes are. This symposium aims at unravelling these aspects of contemporary careers. The symposium contributions provide an up-to-date overview of the association between career determinants, patterns and outcomes. Regarding career determinants, both individual factors (e.g., gender, learning behaviour, and "arena" behaviour) and organizational factors (e.g., development practices for elderly employees, and learning opportunities) are presented. Career outcomes are measured both objectively (e.g., salary, and hierarchical growth) and subjectively (e.g., health, and work-life balance). Insights into these contemporary career determinants and outcomes may help decision makers improve sustainable work and, consequently, promote human and organizational vitality.
