2009 CAR Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals

Annual Meetings Academy of Management, August 7-11, 2009
(August 7-8 for PDW presentations) Chicago, Illinois
    Deadline: January 15th

We invite our colleagues in the Careers and other related divisions of the Academy of Management to submit proposals for Professional Development Workshops (PDWs). The PDWs will be held between Friday, August 7th, 8:00 a.m. through Saturday, August 8th, 8:00 p.m. before the start of the regular meetings of the Academy of Management in Chicago, 2009. Generally, we encourage innovative proposals in any areas that relate to the interests and mission of the Careers Division (see the division's website at http://division.aomonline.org/careers/ ) e.g., teaching, practice, international, and connecting to the overall theme of 2009 "Green Management Matters".

For 2009, we are especially looking for submissions of the following type of PDWs:

    (1) All Careers Event: One of the explicit wishes of our members is to have the opportunity to learn from each other in a more informal environment. Many of us remember the great Rocky Mountains trip in Denver or Beach Boys and Girls in Anaheim - Saturday off-site events full of career activities which combine something special in the local area with presentations on prominent themes in careers. If you have any ideas or want to put forward a proposal, please contact the PDW-Chair in advance of the deadline.

    (2) Developmental Workshops: We want to encourage PDWs that offer developmental experience to our members that the regular program often cannot provide. Professional and personal development is a major "value added" that our Division offers to our members. This year, we are especially looking for PDWs that can help us to become better educators, among others. We invite PDWs that address different teaching approaches, career perspectives, and are applicable for different student groups from Bachelor students to Executive MBA participants. Of course, proposals regarding the other two domains of the academic role - research and service - are also encouraged.

    (3) Sustainability and Careers: In line with the general conference theme, we invite PDWs that address careers of social activists, social entrepreneurs, and other groups that are often excluded from the mainstream of career studies. We also seek proposals about career development in green and socially responsible organizations. Such organizations often offer unique career experiences, such as sabbaticals to volunteer for PeaceCorp. What are the tangible and intangible impacts of these temporary career shifts - on employees and the organizations that encourage them? As the number of green organizations grows, how do we model such careers?

Beyond these themes, we do wish to emphasize that all innovative and value-adding proposals are strongly encouraged and will be fully considered. Especially workshops at the academia-practice interface are highly welcome.

For the upcoming conference, we would like to get more members involved in the PDW program. If you want more information or to talk things over, please don't hesitate to contact the PDW-chair or contact one of the members of the Executive Committee (see the Careers Division Website). Also, if you have names of any members that you would like to be involved, please pass them through.

The deadline for submitting a PDW proposal is January 15th, 2009. However, we invite you to share the ideas you are considering with us in advance of the deadline (preferably before December 15th).

Please submit your proposal using the new online submission system (see http://submissions.aomonline.org/2009 and not directly to the Careers Division PDW-Chair. Please note that for 2009, the "Rule of Three" also applies to the PDW program. This is in addition to the unchanged "Rule of Three' for the regular program (Monday - Tuesday). In essence, this means that like in the regular program, no person can participate in more than 3 PDWs.

We are looking forward to your exciting ideas for the Careers Division PDW program of 2009!

Svetlana N. Khapova ( skhapova@feweb.vu.nl ), Careers Division PDW-Chair, on behalf of the Executive Committee of the Career Division
