Cassandra,
I have my students do a needs assessment (also called a gap analysis) before class and bring it for discussion. I also have them list three people who they would like to emulate -- locally, regionally, and nationally/internationally. I then have them design questions to ask the individuals and "dare" them to contact at least one of them. Some of the students do it, some don't. Some of the individuals respond to the students and some don't. It is a real world exercise, and it helps them write their resumes -- they can list their skills, knowledge, and abilities from a realistic view. Often, I can add some skills and abilities to their list, if I know them particularly well. Even if I don't, others in their teams often can.
Hope this helps.
Let me know if you wish to have a copy of the needs assessment I use. As long as you "cite" me, I don't mind if you use it.
Regards,
Karen
