  • 1.  Student Question: how easy for phd from EU to get job in states?

    Posted 05-25-2018 16:49
    Hi:

A student contacted me who is looking at OB phd programs in the US and EU. Her boyfriend is pursing a phd in the US.

Her question: if she gets a phd degree from a program in the EU, how likely is it that she could easily find a job at a US university? .
(fyi: she does not hold citizenship in either the US or EU)

Any and all suggestions and advice would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

    Take Care, Sherry

    Dear Sherry,

It is difficult to generalize across EU countries and even institutions, but from what I have experienced it is easier to find a job with a US PhD. Yet, we have many examples of successful mobility from the European universities to the USA. It all depends on a) quality of publications at the end of a PhD, and b) quality of the PhD level training provided by the institution.  In the Netherlands, most PhD programmes support a 4-articles PhD dissertation. Ideally, 2 papers from the dissertation get published in journals with the impact factors of for example JVB or higher, before the job search. Clearly those who get their papers considered by the AMJ and related journals, will have doors open in many institutions.

    Best wishes,

    Svetlana

Hi Sherry - the student should also know that some EU programs are considered to be truly global programs, such that it is relatively easy to move to the US after. INSEAD and London Business School are two. It's a matter of training, rather than any geographic bias, per se. There is a perception that US-style training is most useful for publishing in top journals, and most research universities want to hire people they think will be tenured. A rule of thumb in considering programs is that the more faculty who have US training, the easier it is to move to the US. Also, it is important to have a US-trained advisor. If the prospective student wants to be placed in the US, she should look at how many students have been placed in the US from that program, and who they studied with.

    Best,
    -Gina
