    Dear CAR Colleagues,

Please make your calendar for the CAREERS DIVISION Plenary session:  Moving Beyond the Moment: What the #MeToo Movement Means for the Future of Careers (Program session: 1291)  on  Monday, Aug 13 2018 3:00PM - 4:30PM at Sheraton Grand in the Sheraton Grand Ballroom II. We have assembled a terrific panel this year comprising Anne O'Leary-Kelly, U. of Arkansas, Alison M. Konrad, Western U., Lilia Cortina, U. of Michigan, Marla Baskerville WatkinsNortheastern U. and Gary Powell, U. of Connecticut.

Description: With the viral #MeToo movement and the steady stream of allegations against high-powered individuals, the floodgates have been opened, drawing attention to the pervasiveness of workplace sexual harassment and abuse of power. It would seem that employees are empowered as never before to have their voices be heard without fear of retaliation. Yet, it remains to be seen whether the #MeToo movement reflects a brief moment in time that highlights this misconduct, or if there are lasting impacts to the support provided to those harmed for continuity in their careers. Years of research shows the harmful effects of sexual harassment, including negative impacts to mental health, physical health, and job satisfaction at the individual level, as well as job withdrawal and turnover at the organizational level. Women in particular are understood to suffer career and financial setbacks, as they are more likely to be the target of sexual harassment and to experience job change as a result. The question is, what potential does the #MeToo movement have to mitigate these negative effects on jobs and careers? Could there be positive outcomes of speaking up now that there is legitimacy behind this movement? Does the movement create more inclusive workplaces for women's careers by initiating increased conversations about bias and discrimination? These questions will be explored through a panel of experts from research and practice in this Careers division plenary session.

We look forward to you joining us for this important event.

No pre-registration is required and all are welcome.
