    Invitation to Scholars interested in Gender and Work-Life Inclusion to apply to attend NSF Workshop

    This NSF Sponsored workshop, Fostering Gender and work-Life Inclusion for Faculty in Business Schools and Understudied Contexts: An Organizational Science Lens, will be held on October 1 and 2, 2018 at Purdue University. The workshop is organized by Drs. Ellen Ernst Kossek and Kyung-Hee Lee at the Krannert School of Management and the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence at Purdue University. Interested faculty and doctoral students are invited to apply to attend this workshop as a participant in discussions and to hear the panel presentations.

    Workshop Rationale

    Despite growing media and scientific attention to advancing women in many academic, the gender and related work-life inclusion picture remains challenging.  This is particularly true for faculty trying to juggle personal well-being and healthy lifestyles, those with child and elder caregiving or partner health demands, as well as those with other work-life social identities and relationships that affect faculty roles.

    The gender gap in business education was noticed by the White House and its Council of Economic Advisors, which convened a meeting of deans, policymakers and leading researchers, in 2015.  The goal of the meeting was to develop best practices for business schools to lead in expanding opportunities for women in business and adapt to the 21st-centry workforce.

    In order to make progress in the corporate world, it is important for business schools to lead by example. Although there has been some modest improvement in the retention and upward mobility of women, significant gaps remain. 2015 AACSB data show that fewer than 20% of full professors are women.  What the structural and cultural barriers are, how this gap affects organizational performance and processes, and whether this relatively slow progress on women's career equality is a result of work-family-life issues or other competing narratives (e.g. bias) remains ambiguous.

    What is likely, however, is that addressing gender inequality requires greater scientific inquiry into the science of organizations involving the more effective implementation of formal work-life policies such as extending the tenure clock or dual career hire incentives, and the creation of "work-life inclusive climates."

    Goals

    The goals of this interdisciplinary workshop are:

    ·       to assess work-life and career issues and linkages to faculty gender inclusion and diversity in business schools and understudied contexts from an organizational science perspective;

    ·       to define the scientific terrain of faculty gender and work-life inclusion and intersectionality linkages;

    ·       to increase knowledge of the science of fostering gender, work-life inclusion, career success, and organizational change in understudied faculty contexts;  and

    ·       to foster interdisciplinary conversation with thought leaders, researchers and exemplary key decision-makers in order to identify scientific antecedents, outcomes and future research gaps.

    These goals will be met by bringing together leading scholars and thought leaders from key disciplinary perspectives related to gender and work-life inclusion, career inequality and change from an organizational science view. We seek to advance knowledge regarding the current stage of the science and implications for future research and state of the art practice. A small group of  leading scholars from organizational behavior, strategy and management, industrial organizational psychology, social psychology, sociology, and labor economics among other domains; and a small group of deans from business schools who represent organization leaders' perspectives on barriers to and facilitators for implementing evidence-based science on the practice of creating and sustaining work-life inclusive organizations and how it relates to issues of gender and career equality will be invited.  In order to make the workshop inclusive, a small group of additional faculty, postdocs, and doctoral students will be invited to attend the workshop.

    Subsidized Lodging, Meals, and Travel

    All the meals during the workshop will be provided. A hotel room for 2 nights will be provided by us. For your travel costs, a minimum of a $100 stipend will be provided to cover travel costs.

    Selection Criteria

    Because of space limitations, additional participants will be selected based on these criteria:

    1.     A short description of why they want to attend the workshop and how they will benefit from the workshop

    2.     First-come first-serve across different positions (e.g., faculty, postdoc, or graduate student) and different universities

    3.     Applicants who can stay for the whole conference (The workshop starts early on Monday, October 1 and ends around 2 pm on October 2 pm)

    The decision will be made around August 20 and applicants are encouraged to apply early, and we will notify you whether you are able to attend the workshop.
