Call for Abstracts: AOM Symposium on Autism in the Workplace

    Dear AOM Scholars,

We are putting together a presenter symposium on Autism in the Workplace  to submit to the 79th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management <https://aom.org/annualmeeting/> in Boston, which will take place August 9-13, 2019, and whose theme is making Organizations Inclusive.  We would appreciate the opportunity to consider your work for inclusion within that symposium.

The symposium will focus on autism in the workplace from both an individual and an organizational perspective. The aim of this symposium is to encourage theoretical and empirical research on the employment of individuals with autism. With approximately 200,000 people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) expected to reach young adulthood in the next five years, it is imperative to research the issues associated with their transition into the world of work. Recently several high profile companies have announced efforts to actively recruit and hire individuals with autism as part of their diversity and inclusion policies, drawing attention to this emerging segment of the labor force.

It is estimated that there are 3.5 million Americans living with autism. Approximately 70% of these individuals will be unable to live independently and the cost to society of supporting each individual may exceed 3 million dollars across their lifetime. Autism Speaks estimates the unemployment rate for individuals with autism to be as high as 85%. While there are organizations that focus on the school to work transition of young adults with ASD, little is known about their job search and career experiences.

Examples of topics for this symposium may include the school to work transition of young adults on the autism spectrum, process issues in recruitment, job search and job choice, the career experiences of individuals with autism, and the Human Resource and organizational policy issues surrounding the employment of individuals with autism.

If you are interested in having your work included in this symposium submission, please send a 250-500 word abstract of that work to ahurley@chapman.edu by December 10th 2018.

The overall timeline is as follows:

    •December 10, 2018: Abstracts due to mailto:ahurley@chapman.edu

    • December 15, 2018: Abstract selection complete and notifications made

•January 3, 2018: Extended abstract due (2-5 pages text, excluding references and up to 2 pages of appendices)
