Academy of Management Careers Division Online Social events using Gather.town, 2021
Careers Division is hosting two social events on Gather.town, 12 hours apart to cover the globe. Please join us at session #1035 (Sunday 6am New York) or #694 (Sunday 6pm New York).
The purpose of Gather.town at this year's AOM is to facilitate the opportunity to chat with old and new colleagues, somewhat like when we have an in-person social at AoM. We hope you will come to the room, relax, chill with some buddies and catch up, just a little, in these crazy virtual times.
Each of the two sessions will be open for two hours. We hope you will stay long enough to feel like we are a community once again.
Technically:
- Enter the Careers Division Social session via the AOM program
- Click or copy and paste the link in the chat in the AOM session into a new tab to open Gather.town
- Turn off your audio and camera on other platforms (Zoom, Teams, etc) so Gather.town can use them
- Use your full name when entering Gather.town so others can recognise your avatar
- To move around Gather.town, use your keyboard's arrow keys, not your mouse.
Once in Gather.town:
- Move to the help desk in the Main room for useful information and volunteers to show you around
- Explore the Lounge which has a fireplace, a bar, a gaming table, lots of private spaces to chat and even collaboration areas for small groups
- Want to go to the beach? It's at the bottom of the Main room. There are things to do there, too.
- (Reminder: Use the arrow keys, not your mouse.)
Visit the Keynote room every 15 minutes:
- From the Main room you can move to the Keynote room
- Starting on the hour, every 15 minutes will be a short presentation or announcement on the podium
- The program at the help desk will tell you who's speaking when you arrive.
What else to do in Gather.town:
- Chat with people. You can see and hear each other when you move close to them.
- Make that a private chat by going to a carpeted area where only those on the carpet can communicate
- Use the "follow" function to walk together with your besties
- Perhaps join others at a whiteboard in a collaboration area.
- On your own? Look for objects that glow yellow as you approach (press keyboard 'x' to interact), perhaps play some music at the piano or harp, have a cake at the bar (BYO drinks, sorry ☹). Perhaps play a game in the gaming area.
- Our volunteers will be happy to introduce you to others you might want to chat with. Want an introduction? Ask a volunteer.
Extra tips:
- Your zoom background doesn't appear in Gather.town
- town is only available on the web, there is no mobile version
