Call for Experiences: Careers Research and Its Place in the Management Field

    Dear CAR colleagues and friends,

    Lexi Hanna and I are writing an essay on the relationship between the Careers field and the broader management community, and we need your help.

    Over the years, many of us have observed and personally experienced that careers research can struggle to find a home in mainstream management journals, including the Academy journals. Careers scholarship is sometimes viewed as a niche area or as belonging more naturally within psychology than management. At the same time, careers research addresses many fundamental questions about work, organizations, and society that are central to management scholarship.

    To inform our essay, we would love to hear from members of the Careers community at all career stages. We are interested in both positive and negative experiences, including:

    • Experiences publishing (or attempting to publish) careers research in mainstream management journals (and particularly, the AOM journals);
    • Encounters with perceptions of careers research as peripheral, niche, or "not management";
    • Examples of successful integration between careers and broader management conversations;
    • Consequences of this divide for career development (e.g., tenure or promotion decisions), research opportunities, collaborations, doctoral training, or the field more generally;
    • Any other anecdotes or reflections that you think are relevant.

    Our goal is to document such experiences and, ultimately, formulate how Careers and Management might be more strongly connected going forward. We believe there is much to gain from a closer integration of these communities.

    If you would be willing to share your experiences or perspectives, please feel free to email us at j.akkermans@vu.nl and/or alexishanna@unr.edu.

    Thank you in advance for contributing to the conversation!

    Best wishes,
    Lexi and Jos
