    CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: WHARTON GLOBAL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2023

    Dear Faculty Colleague,

    As part of Wharton Global Initiatives, in July 2023 we will be hosting the twelfth year of a special annual initiative, the Wharton Global Faculty Development Program. This program aims to assist in the professional development of young scholars outside the U.S., with a particular focus on learning to publish in the leading academic journals in Management and related areas. This year we plan to conduct this program VIRTUALLY via Zoom, over a four-day period from 24-27 July, 2023.

    We are pleased to invite your school to select up to two junior faculty members from your Management department or equivalent (Strategy, Human Resources, Organizational Behavior/Theory, Entrepreneurship, International Business, etc.), to attend this virtual Wharton workshop on navigating the publication process. Please note that nominees must be junior faculty (i.e., tenure-track or equivalent) and hold a PhD in Management or a related field.

    There is no fee for participating in this workshop; Wharton supports the program as a way to share our faculty's knowledge and experience with the global academic community. 

    In past years, junior faculty attendees have come from universities in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa, providing an opportunity to build connections with a global network of fellow scholars at a similar career stage. Past participants have come from the Stockholm School of Economics, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, Munich School of Management, INSEAD, IESE, ESADE, EPFL, University of Lugano, Indian School of Business, Lappeenranta University of Technology, Tilburg University, Rotterdam School of Management, Australia National University, The Second University of Naples, Chinhoyi University of Technology, National Cheng-Kung University in Taiwan, Nanyang Technological University, Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Lagos Business School, University of Stellenbosch, University of Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town, University of Edinburgh, American University of Cairo, Singapore Management University, and more.

    The workshop sessions will be led by senior standing faculty in the Wharton School's Management Department, including Professor Martine Haas, Professor Rahul Kapoor, Professor Matthew Bidwell, and Professor Lori Rosenkopf. In order to try to accommodate time zone differences, we will be holding the virtual program in four formal sessions as follows (all times are Eastern Time):

    • Monday 7/24 – 8.30am – 1.00pm ET
    • Tuesday 7/25 – 8.30am - 11.30am ET
    • Wednesday 7/26 – 8.30am - 11.30am ET, plus 11.30am-1pm ET for optional social gathering
    • Thursday 7/27 – 8.30am – 1.00pm ET

    During each session, the faculty member will take participants through the development of one of their own A-level journal articles, working from the original submission through revisions and responses to reviewers to final acceptance. The faculty members all have recently served or currently serve in senior editorial positions at journals including (but not limited to) the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal. Attendees will receive the documents ahead of time and will be expected to have read them thoroughly before each session. Participants must also undertake to attend all the virtual sessions, not just some of them.

    Please note that this program is different from a typical paper development workshop at the Academy of Management or elsewhere. Its primary focus will be on learning from the publishing experience of Wharton's management faculty, and gaining deep insight into the publishing process in various top journals, using the Wharton faculty members' publications as teaching tools. Participants in the program will also be invited to form small groups if they wish to read and give peer feedback on each other's working papers or research proposals outside the scheduled formal session periods, but this will not be part of the program itself, and the Wharton faculty will not be able to review or provide feedback on participants' papers or proposals. 

    To apply for the program, please send the following materials to Ryan Acito at acitory@wharton.upenn.edu by no later than 12:00 noon ET on Monday, June 5, 2023: 

    -          A brief letter of nomination for up to two candidates from your school.

    -          An application letter from each nominee introducing themselves and their research interests, and explaining their interest in the program.

    -          In a separate document, each nominee should also provide up to five keywords to describe their theoretical or thematic focus and up to three keywords to describe their empirical or methodological approach.

    -          An academic resume from each nominee.

    We will notify applicants of their admission to the program by Friday, June 16, 2023.
