2022 Division Scholarly Program: Call for Submissions

The Careers Division (CAR) seeks scholarly submissions of papers and symposia for AOM 2022, the 82nd Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, to be held hybrid, both online and in-person from 4th to 10th August 2022. The Meeting will be held in Seattle, Washington, USA with sessions at the Washington State Convention Center and several other nearby hotels, and on the virtual Annual Meeting platform.
Attendees will be able to participate on-site in-person in Seattle as well as virtually. The on-site meeting of most live and all hybrid scholarly and PDW sessions will be from Friday 5th to Tuesday 9th August. Some sessions will be scheduled the day before (Thursday 4th) or after (Wednesday 10th) the on-site meeting. For those attending virtually, participation may be:
- Synchronous virtual only ("webinar" and "meeting" style) sessions
- Asynchronous (on demand) virtual only sessions or
- Live-streamed on-site sessions hybrid sessions.
We now call for your papers to make up the Career Division's scholarly program.
Mission Statement: The Careers Division fosters the general advancement of research, learning, teaching, and practice in the field of careers, while encouraging the extension and unification of knowledge pertaining to careers, and thereby enhancing the practice of management.
Careers Domain: Research in the field of careers addresses people's lifelong succession of work experiences, the structure of opportunity to work, and the relationship between careers and other aspects of life. Submissions for the conference may reflect any topic that fits within the careers domain and extends our understanding of careers. The Careers Division is open to qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method approaches as well as conceptual and theoretical submissions. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Individual career development, career management strategies, proactive behaviors, and career planning;
- All manner of objective and subjective career success outcomes from pay to satisfaction, performance to stress, and employability to career sustainability;
- Workforce diversity and inclusion as well as race, culture, and gender effects in and on careers;
- Organizational career management systems and approaches as well as the relationships between HR systems, talent management practices and careers;
- Developmental relationships and networks, as well as mentoring, coaching and counseling;
- Cross-cultural, international, and comparative careers as well as expatriate experiences;
- Effects of societal, national, industrial, organizational, occupational, technological and social context on careers;
- Career disruptions, shocks such as COVID-19 but others also, transitions and plateauing;
- Labor market structures, functions, and mobility;
- Careers of specific groups, such as top management teams, mothers, entrepreneurs, flex workers, gigsters, remotes, first responders, healthcare workers and beyond.
Conference theme: We encourage contributions that relate to the theme for the meeting " Creating a Better World Together", a critically important topic at a time when we are adapting to a new normal and recovering from the challenges and often devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest. What will business organizations look like in the new normal? While the spreading uncertainty challenged many organizations and social structures, several lessons were nonetheless learned. Business has demonstrated the capacity to address world problems at a pace and scale that few would have predicted, this could be an opportunity to reset individual and organizational practices that enable the creation of new future organizational arrangements.
There is a growing awareness of the vital role of organizations, managers and stakeholders in tackling societal challenges including environmental sustainability; inter-generational trade-offs where future generations cannot make their voices heard today; and issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The transition from the past two years to a better future leads to questions such as what is needed to create future institutions, relationships, systems, and processes that are different from the past? What skills will organizations and managers of the future need? How can organizations, managers and stakeholders deal with prevailing uncertainty? How can organizations, managers, employees and stakeholders develop and enhance capabilities to anticipate and agilely respond to pandemics, other world-wide concerns, and new challenges? For careers scholars, what is needed at individual, managerial and organisational level to navigate the future of work?
We encourage submitters of scholarly papers and symposia to consider, yet certainly not be bound by, this year's conference theme. As the practice of management is certainly relevant to careers, we hope to see many thematic submissions. However, we very much welcome new original research in any aspect or area of careers studies.
Submission Guidelines: The CAR scholarly program will include both papers and symposia. Details of the requirements for each session type (paper versus symposium) are outlined on the Submission Process page. Please also keep in mind that symposia (including panel discussions) have a higher chance of acceptance when they indicate potential co-sponsorship by other relevant divisions.
Session format considerations: Sessions may be (1) on-site in person (2) Hybrid on-site in-person AND live streamed (3) Virtual only, live or (4) Virtual only, asynchronous (on demand). Submitters will be asked how they plan to attend the Annual Meeting and their preferred session format, but program accept/reject decisions will be blind to that information. Irrespective of your preferred format, it is important you specifically address how you will incorporate online attendees in your session.
Please note that all papers should be submitted using the AOM submission system. The submission system opens early December 2021 and closes on Tuesday, 11 January 2022 at 17:00 (5pm) ET (New York Time). Earlier submissions are encouraged and any submissions after the deadline will not be processed, so please ensure a timely submission. Also, note that there is limited space on the scholarly program and, consequently, not all submissions can be accepted.

Regardless of your career phase, AOM provides excellent support for reviewing and we welcome your involvement whether you are a new or long-standing annual meeting attendee. Without our reviewers, we cannot create a great program. In other words: We need your help because to have helpful reviews, we need many helpful reviewers!
Reviewing guidelines and sign up for the Careers Division is at https://aom.org/events/annual-meeting/reviewing. The actual review period will occur after submissions have been received and checked-in and will have clear submission deadlines.
Careers Division Awards: The Careers Division offers several awards for the annual meeting, including the Best Overall Paper Award, the Michael Driver Best Symposium Award and the Arnon Reichers Best Student Paper Award. The award winners will be determined by committees of around 3-5 scholars, and the winners will be announced during the AOM 2022 conference.
