CAREERS DIVISION – Seeking Volunteer for COMMUNICATIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA CHAIR Role

We are seeking a volunteer for the Careers Division (CAR) Communications and Social Media Chair and encourage you to email current Careers Division Chair, Rick Cotton (cottonCAR@uvic.ca ) and Chair-Elect, Denise Jepsen (denise.jepsen@mq.edu.au) if you are interested in taking on this important but relatively low hourly commitment role or come talk to us at the AOM Meeting in Boston if you have questions.  We encourage you to please express interest by August 15, 2023, if possible.

The Communications and Social Media Chair guides our Communications and Social Media Team which includes our Newsletter Editor, Associate Newsletter Editor, Webmaster and Social Media Lead.  The Chair creates a Communications and Social Media Plan and associated annual goals for this team and then directs and advises team members in line with that plan.  In general, the Chair will solicit content from both Careers Division members and Careers Division Executive Committee Members as described below and then work with their team members to get items posted in line with the team's roles as they pertain to different outlets (i.e., newsletter, website, social media).

The Chair also identifies opportunities to update and enhance the CAR website (https://car.aom.org/careers/home) and directs the Webmaster to make updates to keep the site current and appealing. This website includes the Careers Connect discussion forum, the Career Forum Newsletter, Careers Division Library, sponsor acknowledgement and annual award winner content which all should be timely and relevant.  The Chair also devises and communicates broad and specific appeals to solicit LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube channel draft posts by Careers members as well as the posting of news and announcements by Careers members to the unmoderated Careers Connect discussion forum.  The Chair advises the Newsletter Editor and Associate Editor on the development and on-time delivery of two editions of the Career Forum Newsletter per year and will encourage and hold accountable CAR Executive Committee members for drafting content for one to two posts per member per year to then be modified and communicated with the help of designated channel team members, in line with their channel roles.

Key areas for the Chair to solicit content which is then revised and posted by their Team members includes: exciting new research publications; calls for careers papers, special issues and research proposals; top conferences and workshops that have careers tracks or themes; targeted interviews and research presentations from Careers members, including on careers research methods; and soliciting additional volunteers for the division when needed. The Careers Division Communications and Social Media Chair also liaises with the CAR Division Chair for additional content ideas and on occasion, serves as a bridge between CAR, other AOM Divisions and the Academy.

Desired skills include excellent writing and editing abilities, an eye for effective graphic design and communication of careers-related content in a variety of outlets, ability to track and leverage analytics (e.g., click through rates, shares, likes, etc.) for greater impact, an overall understanding of Careers Division member research areas, ability to virtually collaborate with their team to generate interest in our division while meeting relevant publication deadlines and soliciting others in developing ongoing, interesting and useful communications to our membership.

Thanks for your consideration and looking forward to seeing you at AOM in Boston!

Rick Cotton, 2022-23 Careers Division Chair

Denise Jepsen, 2022-23 Careers Division Chair-Elect
